DEPARTMENT OF STATE OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY

(Feb. 3) February 4, 1952

S/S

The Secretary had at his house last night Sir Oliver Franks and Mr. A.D. Marris. The Secretary has been interested for some time in getting Mr. Marris into the Iranian problem. He included a postscript to a letter he wrote Mr. Marris informing Mr. Marris that he had tried to get him into this problem.

Mr. Marris told the Secretary that he had not understood the postscript on the letter and had heard nothing at all about the suggestion that the Secretary had made to Mr. Eden that he be brought into the matter.

The Secretary suggested that Mr. Marris come in and talk to the Department about this problem and that through this he could take back our ideas to London which might be helpful in solving the matter. Mr. Marris said he would prefer to talk to Sir Oliver Franks further about it before taking any definite steps in this direction.

I believe the Secretary explained to Mr. Marris fully the various difficulties we are in with regard to Iran.
