DEPARTMENT OF STATE Memorandum of Conversation
DATE: February 5, 1952
SUBJECT: First Call of the Ambassador-designate of Austria
PARTICIPANTS: The Secretary The Ambassador-designate of Austria John F. Simmons, Chief of Protocol
COPIES TO: S S/S S/S-PR WE EUR
His Excellency, Dr. Max Loewenthal-Chlumecky, newly appointed Ambassador of Austria, called on me at 2:00 p.m. today to present copies of his credentials and to request an appointment with the President.
I welcomed the Ambassador to Washington and expressed to him my desire to cooperate in every way in connection with his new assignment to Washington.
The Ambassador spoke of the fact that this assignment was, to him, the realization of a life ambition and that, as a relatively young man, he felt very keenly the responsibility which he was assuming in undertaking the representation of his country, with its many complex problems, at the most important post in its entire diplomatic service.
After some further general conversation, the Ambassador departed.
