The papers of Paul G. Hoffman contain materials related to Hoffman’s service as administrator of the Economic Cooperation Administration during the Truman administration, his personal life, his career as an executive with the Studebaker Corporation, and his association with the Ford Foundation, the United Nations, and other organizations.

Paul Gray Hoffman was born on April 26, 1891, in Western Springs, Illinois. He studied at the University of Chicago but left school after deciding to sell Studebaker cars in Los Angeles. In 1915, Hoffman married his first wife, Dorothy Brown. From 1935 to 1948, Hoffman was the President of the Studebaker Corporation. Hoffman also served as an official with the Committee for Economic Development from 1942 to 1962. In April 1948, President Harry S. Truman nominated Hoffman to lead the Economic Cooperation Administration (ECA). He served as ECA Administrator until 1950. From 1950 to 1953, Hoffman was the President of the Ford Foundation. He returned to Studebaker as chairman of the corporation in 1953. After a merger with the Packard Motor Car Company, Hoffman left Studebaker in 1956. He then served as a member of the U.S. delegation to the United Nations General Assembly and as managing director of the United Nations Special Fund, which provided aid to developing nations. In 1961, Hoffman’s first wife passed away. In 1962, he married Anna Rosenberg. From 1966 to 1972, he was the first administrator of the United Nations Development Program. On June 21, 1974, Hoffman was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Richard Nixon. He died on October 8, 1974.

The Chronological File consists of carbon copies of outgoing correspondence primarily related to Hoffman’s service as the administrator of the Economic Cooperation Administration, his personal life, and his career with the Studebaker-Packard Corporation.
The Economic Cooperation Administration File consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, printed materials, reports, and speeches primarily related to Hoffman’s service as the administrator of the Economic Cooperation Administration.
The Eminent Personages File primarily consists of correspondence between Hoffman and prominent persons such as Dwight Eisenhower, Hubert Humphrey, Lyndon B. Johnson, John F. Kennedy, George Marshall, Richard M. Nixon, Syngman Rhee, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Harry S. Truman.
The Political File consists of certificates, correspondence, newspaper clippings, reports, printed materials, speeches, and telegrams concerning Hoffman’s political activities. Much of the series relates to Dwight D. Eisenhower’s presidential campaign in 1952.
The American Committee on United Europe File consists of correspondence, meeting minutes, reports, and printed materials primarily related to Hoffman’s service as an official with that organization. The American Committee on United Europe was a private American organization that sought to counter communism by promoting European federalism.
The Committee for Economic Development File consists of correspondence, meeting minutes, reports, and printed materials primarily related to Hoffman’s service as an official with that organization. The Committee for Economic Development was created to assist in planning for growth and trade during the transition from a war-time economy to peacetime recovery.
The Ford Foundation File consists of agendas, correspondence, memorandums, newspaper clippings, and reports related to Hoffman’s work at the organization. The Ford Foundation was a private foundation created to reduce poverty and injustice, strengthen democratic values, promote international cooperation, and advance human achievement.
The Studebaker-Packard Corporation File consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, merger documents, printed materials, reorganization plans, and reports related to Hoffman’s career with the company.
The Appointment Book File consists of yearly appointment books that list appointments relating to Hoffman’s career at Studebaker, his personal life, and his work with the Economic Cooperation Administration, the American Committee on United Europe, the Committee for Economic Development, and the Ford Foundation.
The Personal File consists of correspondence, financial records, investment records, and printed materials associated with Hoffman’s personal life and business career.
