COLLECTION DESCRIPTION
The H. Graham Morison Papers consist of legal briefs, letters, memoranda, newspaper clippings, notes, press releases, publications, receipts, reports, and other materials related to his work with the Justice Department and his personal affairs.
The first series is the Department of Justice Files. This series contains legal briefs, letters, memoranda, newspaper clippings, notes, press releases, reports, and other materials related to H. Graham Morison’s work with the Department of Justice. The topics covered include immigration; loyalty issues and the Truman Loyalty Review Board; juvenile delinquency and youth problems; strikes and labor issues, especially with the United Mine Workers Union and various railroad unions; and other matters. Of note is a file unit about the Texas City disaster. A large cargo of ammonium nitrate fertilizer caught fire and exploded, killing hundreds of people and destroying property. When thousands of people sued for negligence on the part of various federal agencies, this became the first class action lawsuit against the United States government under the Federal Tort Claims Act.
The second series is the Subject File. This series contains letters, newspaper clippings, publications and brochures, notes, reports, receipts, memoranda, speeches, and other materials related to H. Graham Morison’s personal affairs. Topics include the Great Falls, Virginia area where Morison lived, churches attended by Morison and Presbyterian church organizations he volunteered with, the National Conference of Christians and Jews, speeches delivered by Morison and others, and matters relating to Washington and Lee University, his alma mater.
