BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Stanley Andrews was born on December 18, 1894 in High Point, Missouri. From 1917 through 1919, he served in the 89th Division in World War I. He graduated from the University of Missouri in 1921 with a degree in journalism and agricultural economics. He worked as a reporter for various newspapers in Kansas, Missouri, and Arkansas from 1922 through 1940. From June of 1940 through 1941, he worked for the Commodity Credit Corporation in Washington, D.C. From 1942 to 1943, he worked in New Orleans for the Farm Credit Administration. In 1943, he re-joined the Army and served in various agriculture and food-related organizations of the Allied Army in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and the United States Zone of occupied Germany. In July 1949, he became the Director of the Office of Foreign Agricultural Relations as part of the United States Department of Agriculture. In December 1951, he moved to the Department of State as a special consultant to complete the work of Dr. Henry Bennett of the Technical Cooperation Administration. In April 1952, he became the Director of the Technical Cooperation Administration, which aimed to help under-developed countries gain knowledge and advance agriculture, health care, and industrial capacity of their nations. Andrews served as Administrator until September 1953. He then left to join the Kellogg Foundation and worked as private consultant on agricultural communications. He died on December 31, 1994 in Pleasant Green, Missouri.

The first series, the Subject File, contains correspondence, memoranda, reports, notes, newspaper clippings, publications, press releases, speeches, and other materials related to the work of Stanley Andrews on domestic and international agricultural issues. Topics covered include: food needs and shortages in Europe following World War II; agricultural exports; farm cooperatives; the Cooperative League; the Point IV program and the Technical Cooperation Administration; land use policies; work with agricultural extension groups at the state level; farm and rural electrification; land grant colleges; consulting work done for the International Cooperation Administration; the World Food Congress; the relationship between agriculture and agricultural improvements and national security; and other matters.
