BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

William Henry Sermon (1900-1968) was the Mayor of Independence, Missouri, from 1958 to 1961. His brother, Roger T. Sermon, was also Mayor of Independence, serving from 1924 until his death in 1950. Both Sermon brothers were well acquainted with Independence's most famous citizen, President Harry S. Truman.

COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The papers of William H. Sermon consist of the contents of a scrapbook made up primarily of newspaper articles and other printed materials relating to Sermon's activities as Mayor of Independence, Missouri in 1959. The collection is arranged in a single series, a Subject File.

The newspaper articles deal with issues of concern to Mayor Sermon, such as neighborhood clean-up efforts, sewer service, taxes, proceedings of the city council, and local Democratic politics. Other printed materials include a program for President Truman's seventy-fifth birthday celebration. The collection also contains a few cards, letters, and photographs.

The Truman Library also has the papers of Roger T. Sermon and Roger T. Sermon, Jr. (William H. Sermon's older brother and nephew), and the papers of William Sermon's predecessor as Mayor of Independence, Robert P. Weatherford, Jr.
