The Records of the Harry S. Truman Library are included among the Records of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), Record Group 64. From the time of the Library’s establishment in 1957 until 1985, the Library was part of NARA’s predecessor agency, the National Archives and Records Service (NARS), which in turn was part of the General Services Administration. NARA was established as an independent agency in 1985.
The Museum Exhibit Case Files consist of correspondence, drawings, educational activities, exhibit and design proposals, exhibition guides, floor plans, invitations, labels, lists and descriptions of artifacts and documents, loan agreements, newspaper clippings, photographs and other audiovisual materials, press releases, printed materials, publicity packets, and reports related to permanent and temporary exhibits.
Much of the collection relates to temporary exhibits created by Truman Library staff, or exhibits that were loaned to the Truman Library, primarily related to President Truman, his administration or his family. Other documents relate to the renovations of the museum, permanent exhibits, the working office or the oval office.
Related records include the Harry S. Truman Library Institute Records; RG 64: Public Programs Files; RG 64: Director’s Reading Files; RG 64: Director’s Trip and Speech Files; RG 64: Atomic Bomb Gallery Visitor Comment Books; RG 64: Living Legacy Gallery Comment Books; Harry S.
