BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

A native of Kirksville, Missouri, Dr. Harry S. Jonas served for thirteen years as Assistant Vice President for Medical Education at the American Medical Association, and was Dean of the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine for nine years.

He also served on the Boards of the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City and of Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health, and as President of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. The papers in this collection deal with his work as Chairman of the Harry S. Truman Statue Committee, which sponsored the creation of a Truman statue in Independence, Missouri. The statue was dedicated in 1976. Dr. Jonas passed away on December 24, 2022.

COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The papers of Harry S. Jonas are comprised of correspondence, photographs, event schedules, programs, lists of participants and guests, a speech draft, and newspaper clippings related to Harry S. Jonas's work as Chairman of the Harry S. Truman Statue Committee from 1972 until 1976. Included are twenty-seven photographs of the statue during its construction, people involved with the statue's production, and the statue's dedication ceremony. Much of the correspondence pertains to the selection of a sculptor for the statue and the financing of the project. The papers are organized in one series and are arranged alphabetically.
