COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

This collection is made up of the contents of six scrapbooks compiled by Helen Ardis Haukenberry, a cousin of President Harry S. Truman. The collection contains newspaper and magazine clippings pertaining to Harry S. Truman, Bess W. Truman, Margaret Truman, and the Truman Presidency.

The clippings consist of articles, photos, and editorial cartoons relating to national politics, legislative issues, and foreign policy as well as social events and the personal affairs of the First Family. Mrs. Haukenberry was especially interested in preserving items that dealt with Truman’s relatives and his hometown of Independence, Missouri. Almost all of the clippings date from the Truman Presidency, but a few items relate to Truman’s brief tenure as Vice President in 1945 and his activities as a former President.

Mrs. Haukenberry’s notes on Truman family history can be found in the Nancy Bentley Papers and in the Truman and Holmes Families Papers.
