COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The papers of John O. Coppock consist of reports and correspondence, ranging in date from 1942 to 1949, but primarily dating from 1947 to 1949, when Coppock was involved in U.S. foreign policy efforts in Greece after World War II. The collection consists of one series, a Subject File, which is alphabetically arranged.

The collection includes the report of Paul A. Porter, dated April 30, 1947, which presents the summary and recommendations of the American Economic Mission to Greece. The American Economic Mission was sent to Greece by the Department of State at the request of the Greek Government in January 1947. Its function was to examine economic conditions in Greece, determine what outside assistance the country would need, and suggest how the Greek Government could make the most effective use of the country’s own resources for economic reconstruction and recovery. Included in the summary and recommendations are chapters on public finance; currency; banking and credit; international commercial and financial relations; government administration; price, rent and wage controls; reconstruction and development; industry and mines; agriculture, food and fishing; and foreign aid.

Also included in the collection are letters and a memorandum written by John O. Coppock as a member of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) Mission to Greece. These materials range in date from the spring of 1947 to the spring of 1948, and refer to such topics as the Greek situation, Communism, the Truman Doctrine, and the Marshall Plan.

Coppock’s papers also include a report he wrote on the situation in Greece at the end of 1948, as well as a report on the War Production Board (WPB), which Coppock prepared while working as an official with the WPB in 1942.

Manuscript collections at the Truman Library pertaining to American foreign policy in Greece in the years following World War II include the papers of Paul A. Porter, Paul R. Porter, and Dwight P. Griswold. In addition, the Truman Library has the manuscript collection of Joseph D. Coppock, brother of John O. Coppock.
