COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The Papers of Monrad C. Wallgren include information relating to his experiences as a national billiards champion, politician, government official, and friend of Harry S. Truman. The papers are arranged alphabetically in a single series. Address books, correspondence, photographs, reports, maps, and scrapbooks are included.

The Wallgren Papers mainly consist of personal correspondence, mostly with constituents and friends. Much of the correspondence relates to his service on the Federal Power Commission from 1950-1951. Extensive correspondence with Harry S. Truman over the decades is also included.

One scrapbook and a few related materials focus on Wallgren's career as a national billiards champion. Other scrapbooks include news clippings and other papers documenting his political journey from beginning to end. Most of the materials relate to his focus on economic production (particularly in wartime), the internment of the Japanese on the West Coast, and public vs. private power. Several political cartoons and photographs are included throughout.

The amount of materials related to Wallgren's administration of Washington as its governor is quite limited. Included are a few administrative documents, maps of the state of Washington, and reports on various projects.

Except for the correspondence mentioned above, there is little information in Wallgren's papers concerning his service on the Federal Power Commission. Relevant materials include a few administrative documents and reports on various public power projects.

The Truman Library has other collections relating to Monrad Wallgren, including the Truman Papers (President's Secretary's Files, President's Personal File 184, and Post-Presidential Papers).
