The Sheet Music Collection includes individual sheet music pieces, collections for orchestra, lesson books, and sheet music albums.
Most of the sheet music in the collection dates from the presidency of Harry S. Truman. Many pieces were gifts from composers to President Truman or Margaret Truman, both of whom were avid lovers of music. This sheet music mostly relates to World War II, the military, Christianity, patriotism, the atomic bomb, the United Nations, Christmas, and various aspects of popular culture. The songs refer to such notable persons as President Truman, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, General Douglas MacArthur, and Adolf Hitler.
The collection also contains sheet music and music albums that were purchased by members of the Truman and Wallace families. The family members signed many of these pieces, which date primarily from the post-Civil War decades to the 1920s.
The different genres of music in the Sheet Music Collection vary from opera to jazz. Polkas, foxtrots, waltzes, and comic songs are included, with lyrics in English, German, French, Italian, and Spanish. Also represented are selections from Broadway musicals and motion pictures, popular favorites such as "God Bless America" and "Old Folks at Home," and songs about Truman's native state of Missouri.
Some of the pieces of sheet music in the collection were handwritten by the composers, and include hand-drawn artwork on the covers.
More information about President Truman's musical interests and Margaret Truman's career in music can be found at the Truman Library in the President's Personal File (PPF) of the Harry S. Truman Papers (especially in PPF 1, 3, and 100), and in the Margaret Truman Daniel and Clifton Daniel Papers.
