My dearest Nan,--

I expect you have been giving me particular fits for not answering your dear old letter, but really dear, I haven't had energy enough to do any thing for the last month, but forgive me this once and I'll not do so again. This terrible weather! Isn't it awful? I am sitting by a big fire like winter time this evening I guess it is going to snow. It rains almost every two or three days, we had such a very hard one last night.

I am glad to hear that Dollie Musser has changed for the better. It was too bad that you didn't get to attend the ball, especially as it was given for your benefit. Anna Palmer graduated with second honors, and is going to teach this fall. Bertie N. is going back to school. One of the saddest affairs happened to Bertie's cousins last week I ever know almost, her husband died and they had only been married only seven months, she isn't but twenty-one and such a sweet girl, she takes his death so hard too, and his dying so soon was quite unexpected to every one. I saw her at church yesterday and she looked so sad. I haven't attended an entertainment of any kind this summer, - had an invitation to one the other week but didn't go, there was quite a good many there heard, and all had a jolly good time. I suppose I'll start to Lamar about the middle of Oct. Pa and John have gotten me a school and it will commence the first of Nov. I would like to see your cute fellow. I went riding with mine yesterday had a boss time. I will close for it getting dark. Give my love to Miss Lida and lots to yourself. Write real soon to [sic] Yours lovingly, Mattie.
