MEMORANDUM (12:30 meeting with President) Item 1.
The President approved the memorandum suggesting to him the nomination of Merle Cochran to be Ambassador to Pakistan. The President has the original of this memorandum with his endorsement of approval upon it and one copy. The original can be reclaimed through Mr. Hopkins at the White House as soon as he has transcribed the President's note on to the carbon for the President's files.

The President approved the attached memorandum prepared by Mr. Thorp on the subject of "Actions to Implement the President's Proposal for Technical Assistance to Underdeveloped Areas." He also approved the suggestion that an executive committee should be set up comprising representatives of State, Treasury, Commerce, Agriculture, ECA, Federal Security Agency, Interior and Labor.
He also approved the suggestion of a public advisory group and asked that a memorandum of suggested names be submitted to him.
