Subject: Message from the Irish Foreign Minister Concerning Cardinal Mindszenty

The Irish Minister called at 12:30 p.m. on February 2nd by appointment made at his request. He delivered a note containing the text of a message from the Irish Minister for External Affairs expressing concern at the arrest of Cardinal Mindszenty of Hungary and suggesting that the President might wish to intervene personally with a view to ameliorating the Cardinal's fate. In presenting his note, Mr. Nunan emphasized that his Foreign Minister was merely suggesting a course for the President's consideration.
In accepting the Minister's note, the Secretary referred to the possibility that the proposal would only invite rebuff but stated that the message would be brought to the President's attention promptly.
