March 1, 1949

Secretary of Agriculture Brannan telephoned the Secretary about the wheat agreement figure. He rehearsed what had happened in their endeavor at arriving at a satisfactory figure. He said he had discussed the matter with the President and the farm leaders in Congress and was hopeful that they could agree on $1.80.

Brannan said that since the Secretary had very kindly conducted this part of the discussions with Sir Oliver Franks, he wondered if the Secretary would give the Ambassador a ring and see what he could do. The Secretary said he would do this but that the Ambassador had been pretty clear that he couldn't go beyond $1.75.

The Secretary telephoned the Ambassador and said that Brannan had talked with the President and with the farm leaders on the Hill and could not get them to agree on $1.75, but he could get their support for $1.80. The Secretary asked the Ambassador if he would have another try with this figure.

The Ambassador said he would see what he could do.
