Summary of telephone conversation with Congressman McCormack
Congress McCormack talked with the Secretary on the telephone at 6 p.m. this afternoon with reference to possible action which might be taken on the part of the National Committee of Christians and Jews in order to assist in alerting the world to the Communist menace. Congressman McCormack said that they requested to call upon the President or the Secretary of State "the President is busy, as is the Secretary" but Congressman McCormack said he has elected Secretary Acheson. The Secretary said he would be glad to see them.
Congressman McCormack said that this need not be connected with a press release. He thought that they would probably want to send a representative group down to see the Secretary and Congressman McCormack's thought was that "coming from there it might be a medium through which it might help arouse public opinion along lines consistent with your policy." The Secretary said that he would talk it over with some of the people in the Department and see what we can do with it.
Congressman McCormack said that their desire is to cooperate, not to embarrass. The Secretary said he would talk to George Allen and see how we can best do it and then he would give the Congressman a call back.
