His Excellency Dr. Ali Sastroamidjojo called on me this morning at 10:45 to present a copy of his Letter of Credence as Ambassador of the Republic of the United States of Indonesia, and a copy of the Remarks he intends to make when received by the President at the White House.

I welcomed Dr. Ali to Washington and congratulated him on the statesmanlike solution of the problem of his country's independence, and said that it promised well for the solution of other serious problems now confronting his country.

The Ambassador replied that he greatly appreciated my remarks. He also wished to convey to me greetings from his Prime Minister.

In answer to my question whether the unfortunate Westerling Rebellion would be controlled, he said that he thought it could be by Indonesian forces without delay.

I told the Ambassador that we had found Dr. Sumitro very cooperative in his position of Charge d'Affaires, and the Ambassador expressed his gratification.

In response to the Ambassador's request for an appointment at the White House to present his Letter of Credence, I asked the Chief of Protocol to make such an appointment and to inform the Ambassador when it was made.
