His Excellency Mario Echandi Jiminez, Ambassador Designate of Costa Rica, was presented to me today at 4:00 o\'clock by Mr. Woodward, Chief of Protocol.
The Ambassador said that he was honored to be in Washington and looked forward to his mission. He had recently met Assistant Secretary Miller in Costa Rica and he was pleased, he said, to have this opportunity of making my acquaintance.
I welcomed Mr. Echandi to Washington and told him that we had always enjoyed very friendly relations with his predecessors, and that I knew we could count on the continuance of the same relationship.
The Ambassador left with me a copy of his Letter of Credence, a copy of the Letter of Recall of his predecessor, and a copy of the remarks he proposes to make at the White House when received by the President. I told him that Mr. Woodward would arrange for this appointment and let him know.
