Dear Arthur:
I am more grateful than I can say for your very helpful letters on March 29 and 31. I, too, have been confident of that "final unity" of which you write, and I have always been sure that I could count on drawing from your wise counsel and far-sighted statesmanship at critical times. However, your unstinting help these last few days has especially encouraged and strengthened me.
I think the appointment of Foster Dulles last week will be most effective in the reinforcement of our efforts to develop a bi-partisan approach to our problems. I share your high regard for his abilities and know that we are very fortunate to secure his services.
We have all noticed the wide gap which your enforced absence from active participation on the Hill has created, and personally I have been deeply distressed that your way back to good health has proved so long and hard. I think it is most important that you take your time and not be led by a sense of duty to return to the lists too soon.
Sincerely yours,
The Honorable Arthur H. Vandenberg, United States Senate.
