Senator Tydings telephoned Secretary Acheson at home on Friday evening. The Senator proposed that the Secretary get General Marshall and former Secretary Byrnes to make a statement to the effect that the Department's policy on China was theirs--not Owen Lattimore's.
The Secretary asked me to get Mr. Rusk and Mr. Peurifoy to consider this matter and discuss it with him. I arranged for Mr. Rusk and Mr. Peurifoy to discuss it and Mr. Rusk has since spoken to the Secretary about the matter. Arrangements should be made for necessary follow-up on this, however. I am not certain whether Mr. Rusk or Mr. Peurifoy is to follow up.
