SUBJECT: First call of the Ambassador-designate of Cuba

PARTICIPANTS: The Secretary The Ambassador-designate of Cuba Señor Dr. Joaqu?n E. Meyer, Minister Counselor, Embassy of Cuba R. D. Muir, Acting Chief of Protocol

COPIES TO: S S/S S/S-PR ARA MJD

His Excellency Señor Dr. Luis Machado y Ortega, newly appointed Ambassador of Cuba, called on me this date to present copies of his credentials and to request an appointment with the President.

After the usual exchange of courtesies, the Ambassador and I recalled our pleasant association at the United Nations Monetary and Financial Conference at Bretton Woods in 1944, at which conference he represented the Cuban Government. The Ambassador mentioned the difficulties with the Soviet Delegation at the conference and this discussion led us to the present Korean situation. The Ambassador stated that not only the Cuban Government but the Cuban people strongly upheld the decision of the United States Government in this matter.

After some further general conversation the Ambassador departed.
