DEPARTMENT OF STATE Memorandum of Conversation
DATE: February 13, 1951
SUBJECT: Arrangements for Mr. MacBride's Visit
PARTICIPANTS: Ambassador Hearne, Embassy of Ireland The Secretary Mr. Raynor, Director, BNA
COPIES TO: EUR BNA S/S-PR American Embassy Dublin
Ambassador Hearne stated that he had called merely to inform me officially of Mr. MacBride's visit. He stated that following a stop in Boston Mr. MacBride would be in Washington for the four nights from February 12 through the 15th after which he would go to Philadelphia for the primary purpose of his visit to this country, an address before the Friendly Sons.
The Ambassador then referred to his desire for me and Mrs. Acheson to attend a dinner he intends to have for Mr. MacBride and referred to possible complications because of Ambassador Garrett's dinner. I replied that I saw no reason why I should not dine twice with Mr. MacBride. The Ambassador said he would then follow through on arrangements for his dinner.
The Ambassador also referred to the presentation to the Library of Congress of a copy of the new edition of "Book of Kells". He said he wondered if perhaps it would be more appropriate for the presentation to be made to the President or to me. I replied that the plan to present it to the Library was quite appropriate.
