H - Mr. McFall (via S/S)
Senator Benton telephoned the Secretary today and said he had written a eulogistic speech about the Secretary, which had been written for some time, and not delivered because the Senator thought it would get greater publicity if could come as an answer to some specific attack on the Secretary. He asked that the Department let him know at any time they thought a good opportunity had arisen or was about to arise.
Perhaps the forthcoming debate on the air by Burleson and Bentsen of Texas, calling for the Secretary's resignation, which you mentioned at the 9:30 meeting, might be the kick-off point for Senator Benton.
