CONGRESSIONAL TELEPHONE CALLS

On May 24 the Secretary telephoned Senator George to express appreciation and congratulations for his successful efforts on the Reciprocal trade bill, and he telephoned Congressmen Richards and Vorys for their work on the Indian Grain bill.

On May 25 the Secretary attempted to reach Congressman Durham of North Carolina, who had left Washington. A letter of appreciation should be drafted for him. He also telephoned the Speaker to tell him what an excellent success he had had on the Indian Grain bill. During the course of conversation the Speaker said he was puzzled by the great reversal that had taken place on this proposal. When it was first introduced, it appeared that everyone was for it, and yet it had encountered rough going. The Speaker speculated that this may be due to worry on the part of the Congress that this is the beginning of a series of such requests, that the Congressmen think probably Israel well be next, with others to follow.
