MEMORANDUM FOR S/S
Mr. Matt Connelly of the White House called me today and said that he hoped the Secretary would be able to see this afternoon a Mr. Paul Ginsberg, who is National Commander of the Jewish War Veterans of the USA. Mr. Connelly said that Mr. Ginsberg had seen the President and had asked the President who the President would like to see honored by the Jewish War Veterans. The President suggested the Secretary of State.
Mr. Ginsberg wanted to see Mr. Acheson to present an invitation to a dinner on December 30 at the Waldorf in New York. The invitation stemmed from the President's suggestion and the dinner will honor several people who have been outstanding in combating communism. Others honored will be Senator Austin, Mr. J. Edgar Hoover, and I believe one or two others.
I explained to Mr. Connelly that Mr. Acheson was taking leave and did not plan to be in the office. I volunteered to see Mr. Ginsberg and Mr. Ginsberg and Mr. Bernard Weitzer came in to see me later in the day. They left with me the attached letter and repeated what Mr. Connelly had told me about Mr. Ginsberg's conversation with the President.
Mr. Ginsberg still wants to see Mr. Acheson and I have made an appointment tentatively for 2:30 on October 8. At this time Mr. Ginsberg wants to have his picture taken with Mr. Acheson. He has had it taken with most of the other Cabinet members.
May I have a recommendation as to whether the Secretary should accept this invitation prior to the appointment set up for October 8. I feel that this would be a difficult one to turn down since the suggestion stemmed from the President.
