MEMORANDUM OF CONVERSATION WITH THE PRESIDENT
Item No. 2
Ambassadorial Posts
The President approves of the ambassadorial appointments.
He approves my talking to Mr. Conant about Germany.
He wishes to see Mr. Dulles and to thank him for his work and to say that he would be delighted to have Mr. Dulles accept the appointment but that he understands from me that Mr. Dulles does not wish to be Ambassador. I have spoken to Mr. Dulles, who appreciates the President's attitude and he will be in Washington next Wednesday. Miss Evans will try to get an appointment.
The President approves of Mr. Rusk. I have spoken to Mr. Rusk and he has the matter under consideration.
The President approves of our going ahead with Mr. Kennan about Moscow.
I did not have a chance to go into the other appointments, except to mention briefly the possibility

of Mr. McGhee's going to Turkey. The President would approve that if that is our and Mr. McGhee's wish. I did not have time to go into a replacement of Mr. McGhee and the matter had better be held until I am free to think more about this.
