DEPARTMENT OF STATE Memorandum of Conversation
DATE: April 7, 1952
SUBJECT: First call of the Ambassador-designate of Haiti
PARTICIPANTS: The Secretary The Ambassador-designate of Haiti R.D. Muir, Acting Chief of Protocol
COPIES TO: S S/S S/S-PR MID ARA
His Excellency Jacques N. Leger, newly appointed Ambassador of Haiti, called on me at 2:30 p.m. today to present copies of his credentials and to request an appointment with the President.
After the usual exchange of courtesies, I welcomed the Ambassador to Washington and expressed the hope that he would enjoy his new post. The Ambassador expressed his pleasure at being honored by this Government by being selected for the post at Washington.
The Ambassador recalled our previous meetings at the Fourth Meeting of Consultation of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of American States in Washington during March 1951 and, subsequently, at the signing of the Japanese Peace Treaty in San Francisco last September. He stated that it had been a very busy year for me and I agreed.
He also stated that he had heard that I might make a trip to Brazil and hoped that I would have an opportunity to make a visit to his country en route. I said that it would give me much pleasure to do so but, unfortunately, I did not think that this would be possible since I expect to go to Europe shortly after my return from Brazil.
After some further general conversation, the Ambassador departed.
No matters of a political nature were discussed.
