His Excellency Clarence L. Simpson, newly appointed Ambassador of Liberia, called on me at 12:30 p.m. today to present copies of his credentials and to request an appointment with the President.
The Ambassador expressed to me his great satisfaction at his appointment to Washington. He indicated the appreciation of his countrymen for all we had done for them. He spoke warmly of the fine stand President Truman had taken in world affairs, mentioning what a loss to the world his retirement would be. He was kind enough to emphasize his high opinion of my achievements in recent international conferences.
I assured the Ambassador of my wish to cooperate at all times, telling him of my warm friendship for his predecessor, Mr. King.
After some further general conversation, the Ambassador departed
No matters of a political nature were discussed.
