DEPARTMENT OF STATE Memorandum of Conversation

DATE: April 28, 1952

SUBJECT: First Call of the Ambassador-designate of Cuba

PARTICIPANTS: The Secretary The Ambassador-designate of Cuba John F. Simmons, Chief of Protocol

COPIES TO: S S/S S/S - PR ARA MID

His Excellency Señor Dr. Aurelio Fernandez Concheso, newly appointed Ambassador of Cuba, called on me at 2:45 p.m. today to present copies of his credentials and to request an appointment with the President.

After the usual exchange of courtesies, the Ambassador assured me that he hoped, with my help, to carry out a successful mission during his incumbency as Ambassador here. He spoke of his past assignment as Ambassador to Washington, mentioning that he remembered me at that time (1945) as Assistant Secretary of State. He said that his task would be easier now than in the troubled times around 1945. He added that the condition of Cuba was now very favorable politically and fairly good economically, although the present large sugar crop was causing some concern.

I assured him that I should be happy to be of all possible assistance to him here and that it was a pleasure to see him in Washington once more.

After some further general conversation, the Ambassador departed.
