MEMORANDUM FOR S/S
Mr. Eric Johnston called on the Secretary this afternoon and stated that he was quite concerned regarding a report he had that the Tariff Commission is going to recommend an increase in the duty on Swiss watches. He said that the Swiss have said that if this happens they would not allow the importation of any American motion pictures. He regarded this as potentially a very bad situation and went into a lengthy discourse on the evils of a high tariff policy, remarking that "First it was cheese; now it is Swiss watches; next week it will be something else." The Secretary said that he would look into this matter.
Will you please have someone prepare a report on this for us.
