Secretary Acheson telephoned General Bradley this morning to inquire about the possibility of having someone from the Pentagon go with him to the ANZUS meeting in Honolulu. He said it was highly desirable that our delegation have available to it the services of a staff officer in addition to Admiral Radford. The type of person he had in mind was Admiral Smith or Colonel Beebe. Mr. Acheson mentioned that at previous conferences in London and New York we had the services of staff officers in addition to ranking principal officers such as Admiral Conolly and Admiral Robbins.
General Bradley said that the JCS was opposed to sending someone because they feared it might establish a precedent. He said that he personally agreed with the Secretary, but had been "talked down" by the JCS. General Bradley said he understood why the Secretary would want to take someone with him, and would take the matter up with the JCS and let Mr. Acheson know the outcome.
