MEMORANDUM OF TELEPHONE CONVERSATION

Participants: Mr. Donald Dawson Mr. Acheson

Mr. Donald Dawson telephoned the Secretary this afternoon and wondered if something might be arranged in the way of a foreign assignment for Charlie Van Devanter, former publicity man for the Democratic National Committee, who also served more recently as an assistant to Senator Kerr. Mr. Dawson said that Van Devanter was a very able and competent man in the Public Liaison field and would like to go abroad.

The Secretary said he would look into this and let him know.

Donald Dawson telephoned the Secretary this afternoon to inquire if he knew of the report that Ambassador Eugenie Anderson was going to accept the presidency of Stephens College. The Secretary said he didn't know for sure but he thought the rumor was not true.

The Secretary promised to let Mr. Dawson know what the situation was in this respect.

Participants: Mr. Donald Dawson Mr. Acheson

Donald Dawson telephoned the Secretary this afternoon to the effect that Mr. Harriman had spoken to him about the possibility of Grace Tully getting a job in the State Department. Miss Tully has been working for the Roosevelt Memorial Foundation, and more recently for Mr. Harriman.

Mr. Dawson said that Miss Tully was a very effective worker and excellent at dealing with people. He wondered if she might not fill in somewhere in Mr. Francis Russell's division?

The Secretary said he would look into the matter.
