DEPARTMENT OF STATE Memorandum of Conversation
DATE: September 8, 1952
SUBJECT: Farewell Visit by Indian Ambassador
PARTICIPANTS: The Secretary Mr. B. R. Sen, Ambassador of India SOA - William Witman II
COPIES TO: S S/S S/S-PR NEA SOA
Ambassador B. R. Sen paid a courtesy call on me at 3:30 P.M.
Expressing regret at the Ambassador's departure after such a short stay in this country, I commended Mr. Sen on his reappointment to Rome and Belgrade. I also stated that I was sorry that I had been unable to pay a visit to the Far East and to India, as Ambassador Bowles had urged me to do.
Mr. Sen spoke with conviction of the profound impression Mr. Bowles has made in India. He also referred to his farewell visit to President Truman this morning, and mentioned that he had told the President of the very high regard in which the President is held in India - a regard which frequently seemed to be higher abroad than in the United States. Mr. Sen said that he particularly felt that the President's Point Four program was an outstanding act of courageous statesmanship.
No substantive matters were discussed during this visit.
