Accommodations at the Waldorf Astoria For Secretary Acheson and Party

In response to your request and my telephone conversation with Jeff Kitchen, I transmitted to Ed Hastings, General Manager of the Waldorf, the detailed requirements for the Secretary's party.

Hastings has offered to make available, Suite 28-A, in the Waldorf Towers which is a luxury suite used by Queen Juliana recently and by the Duke of Windsor. While the Department might prefer a somewhat less luxurious suite, the fact remains that it appears to be the only one available that would give the number of rooms required.

I am attaching a chart of the suite but have penciled in the two single adjacent rooms opening off the entrance corridor which can be made available for the two SY agents. The room marked "Den" in ample to accommodate luncheons or dinners for as many as twenty people. The bedroom in the northwest corner would presumably be occupied by Jeff Kitchen who, as you will note, could go into and out of his room without passing through the Acheson bedrooms. This room is very large and could be used as the working office as well as a bedroom if desired. I recommend, however, that the maid's room, which is just off the dining room, be set up as an office.

You will note that there is no bedroom available in this suite for Miss Evans and the other Secretary, but Mr. Hastings has promised us a twin-bed double room on the floor below the suite from which the suite could be reached very easily either by a stairway or elevators.

This suite will cost $125 a day plus $15 or $20 a day for the double room on the 27th floor but, of course, has the advantage of being completely away from other parts of the hotel and can be given excellent security protection. We are prepared to install an off-premises extension from the Mission switchboard into whichever room Jeff Kitchen decides upon as an office.

The Waldorf is also prepared to make a room available for Rudolph Warren if the Secretary decides to bring his car to New York.

Mr. Hastings has been told that the Secretary and his party will need this suite from Sunday, October 12 for a period of approximately two weeks and that it might be needed again later on.

Please let me know immediately if there are any aspects of this arrangement that are unsatisfactory.
