Secretary Sawyer telephoned the Secretary this morning and said that the President had asked him to make a trip to Europe sometime in November to look into the economic situation as it relates to defense. He plans to take with him Mr. Fowler of NPA, Mr. Overby of the Treasury Department and Mr. Tom Snyder of Commerce. Mr. Sawyer said he would like to have his administrative officer, Mr. Osthagen, get in touch with someone in the State Department in connection with his itinerary, official calls he should make, etc.

Secretary Acheson said he would have Mr. Perkins and Mr. Thorp talk over the matter, and he asked that Mr. Osthagen talk with either Mr. Perkins or Bonbright about the trip.

Mr. Sawyer said that he had spoken with Mr. Harriman about his trip, and Mr. Osthagen was going to get in touch with Harriman's people.
