SUBJECT: Irish Ambassador's Visit to the Secretary

This Irish Ambassador explained that he was returning to Ireland because of the serious illness of his eldest brother. He indicated to the Secretary that he would be glad to have his views on the current international situation.

Before commenting on this subject, the Secretary expressed his concern over Mr. DeValera's recent operations and asked the Ambassador to convey that concern to the Prime Minister. He asked also that the Ambassador convey his personal regards to his predecessor, Mr. Nunan.

The Secretary then reviewed briefly the situation in the principal areas of the world, commenting on specific problems or the situation in particular countries. He mentioned the ratification of the treaties with Germany, the continuing difficulties presented by Berlin and East Germany, progress toward integration in Europe, the problems created by current difficulties in Tunisia and Morocco, the general situation in the Near East, the recent change in government in Lebanon, the situation in Iran, including the recent exchange of notes between Mr. Truman and Mr. Churchill and Mr. Mosadeq, Kashmir, the difficulties confronting Mr. Nehru in India, the problems in Southeast Asia, Indonesia, the truce negotiations in Korea, developments in the Philippines, and relations with Japan.

The Ambassador expressed his appreciation for the wise guidance provided by the Secretary during the very difficult period since the beginning of the war in Korea, and thanked the Secretary for his helpful review of the current international situation.
