Secretary Acheson telephoned the British Ambassador this morning that he had the President's approval on the agrement in connection with the Ambassador's successor, Sir Roger Makins, adding that we were keeping it very close here.
The Ambassador said he assumed that the news would be out in London either Friday or Saturday morning, and that he would try to let us know the time of the release. The Secretary stated we would say nothing here pending the release in London.
The Secretary inquired if it would be desirable or helpful if he were to put out a statement expressing regret at Sir Oliver's departure and also say a few words about Sir Roger Makins. The Ambassador said if the Secretary were moved to do this, he would be delighted and the Secretary agreed he would put something out along those lines.
