Dear Bessie:

I have just about come to the conclusion that I must have offended you in some way. If being in love with you is any offense, I am sorry but it can't be helped you know. Anyway that shouldn't keep you from being real civil anyway.

Won't you at least let me know that you are not "mad", as Shakespeare would say. I was in Kansas City the other day and attempted to call you up but your phone wasn't working or something.

We have given up all hope of rain out here. I guess we'll have to eat canned goods from now until next year or else live on wheat.

Would you object to my coming down Saturday evening? I walk like a wooden- legged man but will probably not be so bad Saturday.

Sincerely, Harry
