Dear Bess:

Just received your Sunday letter. It poured down rain all day Sunday nearly--not all day, but from the middle of the afternoon on. I had one heck of a time getting something to eat that evening. I started out in my raincoat and went down to the Hot Shoppe. It was full to the doors. Came back and got in the car, which I'd by good luck brought home at noon, and drove to Wisconsin and Military Road, same situation; then to Bethesda and it was worse. It was pouring rain all the time. Finally stopped at the chicken place at Connecticut and Nebraska and ate at the counter. So I suppose that's why I didn't get your letter yesterday.

You'll have plenty of time to do your shopping and anything else you want to do, but I'm not coming back here without you and my baby. The country can go to hell if I have to.

That was a nice note from Mrs. Dudley. I'm sure glad I went to see him. Had a letter from Mary saying that Mamma is better than ever. I don't see how she does it.

Our girl Dale Baker announced her engagement to the office force this morning and you never heard so much oh-ing and ah-ing and chattering in your life. She said she was getting the nicest man in the world and I told her that's what she ought to think, but I was of the opinion he'd gotten the best of the bargain.

That'll mean another wedding present. Catherine and Reathel are extremely mysterious about their war jobs but told me this morning it had something to do with antiaircraft. You'll have to cross-examine them.

Love to you, Harry
