Hotel Ben Lomond Ogden, Utah April 5, 1944
Dear Bess:
[In the upper margin: This Hotel belongs to Marriner.]
I am hoping for a letter at Salt Lake City. Wonder if Margie still has a sore finger?
My train landed on time and no body to meet me, so I just went up to the hotel and had started out to get a handle fixed on my grip when in came a photographer. Said he'd met a train from Spokane, Wash. at seven o'clock and so had all the public officials. Some mixup in information. He took my picture and took me to the grip fixer who sewed the handle on and wouldn't take any pay. You'd never meet an outfit like that east of the Alleghen. Mtns. He didn't know me and only remarked it wasn't enough work to be paid for.
Went over to the newspaper across the street and got interviewed. They really treated me royally. Gave me a two column picture on the front page right in the middle and quoted me to the letter.
By that time the Democrats had caught up with me and from then on it was a go around; took me to inspect the gigantic Quartermaster Depot, the Vets Hospital the Air Supply Base and the Naval Depot and by that time it was six P.M. and we finally arrived at the hotel again. The party was at 8 and all the dignitaries were there including the governor! They broadcast the speech over the Utah network. I made the one that was made to the women. Will make Texas speech at Salt Lake.
Love to you Harry
