[The White House] Sept. 24, 1947
Dear Bess:
Well I hope Mr. Latta brings me a letter this morning. It has been four days since you landed and by all the rules of time I should have one letter.
Went to a birthday luncheon for Tom Clark yesterday at the Dept. of Justice. No outsiders, just his staff and Connelly and Clifford from here. It was a very nice affair. Porterhouse steak and all the trimmings and cake and ice cream!
Went to the pool after an interview with Hannegan & Pauley and have only gained 2? pounds. Saw Anderson and told him he'd have to stay on as Sec of Agriculture. He was highly pleased. Now to find a Chairman for the National Democratic Committee. Of course Ed Flynn, Ed Kelley & Hannigan want the usual New York Irish Catholic, and someone who can appease the R's and the crackpots. Hard to find and I don't give a damn myself. I'd be much better off if I were out or licked and I suspect you and Margie would be much more pleased.
Went to dinner with all the economic royalists in the country last night at the Mayflower, Averill Harriman's Advisory Committee. Such men a[s] Brown Chairman of the Board 1st Natl Bk of Chicago, President of Goodrich Rubber, Henry Ford, President General Electric, President Cluett Peabody etc etc ad lib.
Well Judge became fed up on my continually asking for a letter and brought me one. Sorry to hear Frank is laid up. Hope the boil is not too bad, but it's bound to be uncomfortable.
Hope the Denver folks had a nice visit and I'm sure they did. Has Margie gone to work.
My business gets more & more complicated. But I guess I'll come out O.K. I'm having the Big 4 in to talk about a special session on Monday. Food tomorrow and other troubles. Glad you are having cool weather. Has Margie a sore finger?
Lots of love Harry
