[Senate Chamber] August 9, 1935
Dear Bess:
You don't know how much I appreciated the letter that came in this morning's mail. I was so devilishly homesick - I could see you standing out there in the yard watching me drive away and I don't think you kissed me good-bye, or you can put it around the other way if you want me on the defensive. Then I didn't call you from Richmond but it was so late when we got there and I didn't write from there either. We had a very strenuous trip what with high-water detours and what not, and I found Harry Salisbury being taken to the hospital as soon as we arrived. They operated on him for appendicitis about an hour after I called you. I was over to see him with Johnnie this morning and he was doing fine. Doctor said he could go home Wednesday. I sent his dad a wire this morning telling him about it and that Harry is getting along all right.
When I come home next time we are going to take a week's vacation and then maybe I can see you more than twice. I like the Continental and probably with a change or two will stay. You don't know how handy it is. Kiss Margey and tell her to write me a letter. I'm getting this off in a hurry.
Love to you, Harry
