White House December 4, 1952
Last night Adlai Stevenson was here for dinner. Mrs. Truman had asked Mrs. Lasker and Mrs. Mahoney. We discussed public health, Dr. Magnuson, Military Training, the Presidential campaign and other things before and during dinner.
From 9:00 P.M. until 10:30 P.M. the Governor and I talked about the Democratic Party, his part in the future, what he would do from now on and the composition of the National Committee. Agreed that Mitchell should stay on for some months, raise money to pay the deficit and set up an organization for research, publicity etc. That he should try to arrange a policy committee in the Senate and the House and then let the Committee itself decide on the new Chairman.
The governor has decided to take a trip around the world and write a travelogue about it. He is going for his own education. A good thing I think.
Wanted to know what I would do. Told him I didn't know.
