Give therefore the servant an understanding heart to judge they people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this they so great a people.
A campaign of vilification misrepresentation and falsehood was inaugurated against me unequaled in the history of the world. It was successful in that it brought about the election of a bitter opposition Con. From this august body and from the people of the United States. It seems to have been necessary for the president to go through 3 1/2 years of travail such as no President ever went through.
Now here we are with a new start, a majority vote of editors and the bought and paid for radio commentators. Never in the history of the country did a President need the honest help and cooperation of congress, press and people as I needed them in Sept. 1945.
Press-with the final result with you are well acquainted.
Now I have no bitterness in my heart against any one not even the bitter oppositional press and its henchmen the columnists and managing nation. I want your help and cooperation. The majority of this great body was elected on the platform with me. You have learned that the people do not believe in the kept press and the paid radio and that they have no patience with the man who lets a poll be his conscience.
We have the greatest republic in the world if we remember that the people elect us to do what we think is right and not what some pollster or misguided editorial writer tells us to do. I pray God constantly for guidance. I hope you'll do that too. Then this great country which God has chosen to lead the world to peace and prosperity will succeed in that undertaking.
Now for the message on the State of the Union.
Members of the 81st Congress:
On my first appearance before the Congress on April 16, 1945 I became President, I quoted to you the prayer of King Solomon from the First Book of Kings, Chapter 3 verse 9-"Give therefore they servant an understanding heart to judge they people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this they so great a people."
There is a paraphrase of this same prayer in the Second Book of Chronicles, Chapter 1 verse 10-"Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people: for who can judge this they people, that is so great/"
I expressed to the 79th Congress a hope for divine guidance and for help and cooperation from this august legislative body, and from the people of the United States. Until the war's end on September 2, 1945, I received that help and cooperation. XXXXX (But when my peace time policy message came to the Congress on Sept. 6, 1945 a campaign of vilification, misrepresentation and falsehood was inaugurated against me unequaled in the history of the country-I might say in the history of the world.
It was successful in that it brought about the election of a bitter opposition Congress-the 80th. With the final results you are well acquainted.)
I have no bitterness in my heart against anyone, not even the bitter opposition press and its henchmen the paid columnists and editors or the bought and paid for radio commentators.
Never in the history of the country did a President need the honest help and cooperation of Congress, press and people, as I needed them in September 1945, just as I need it now and as I shall need in the next four years. (It seems to have been necessary for the President to go through three years to travail such as no President ever went through before.)
Here we are now, with a new start,--a majority vote of the people saying that they believe in me-in my honesty, integrity and ability to carry on for the country and the world.
All I want to do is to carry out the will of the people of the United States-the greatest of all the great nations.
I want a lasting, fair and honorable peace in the world, I want a fair deal for every part of the population of this great nation-the farmers, the laborers, the white collar workers, the small business men, the big business men, the bankers-all the people.
I want your help and cooperation. The majority of this Congress was elected with me on the same platform. You have learned that the people do not believe in the paid press writers and kept radio commentators and that the people have no patience with public men who lets poll takers control his conscience.XXX
We have the greatest republic in the history of the world and we can keep it that way, if we remember that the people elect us to do what we think is right and not what some misguided poll taker or some paid editorial writer tells us to do.
I pray Almighty God constantly for guidance on the right path. If we all do that then this great country which God has chosen to lead the world to peace and prosperity will succeed in that undertaking. XXXX
(Now, my friends, we'll turn to the message on the State of the Union.)
