President Harry S. Truman (standing before microphones) speaks to an audience of nearly 10,000 persons in the auditorium of his hometown shortly after his arrival in Independence, Missouri. Returning from the U.S. Pacific coast city of San Francisco, where he addressed the closing session of the United Nations Conference, President Truman stopped for a short vacation with his family in Independence. Speaking to the people in his hometown, the Chief Executive said: "There are two things that I must accomplish as President of the United States. The first one is to win the war with Japan -- and we are winning it. The next one is to win a peace." President Truman continued: "The first step toward the winning of that peace has been accomplished in San Francisco." From: Eric Fowler.
