Peiping, China, Winter Palace. Table at which local Japanese Commander signed surrender in 1945. Costumes lined up behind table are those of ancient Chinese palace guards. Chinese throne is in background. Photograph taken during the U.S. Reparations Mission. Edwin Pauley was the U.S. Ambassador on the Allied Reparations Committee from 1945-1947 (the committee that assessed the reparations the Axis powers could afford to pay the victors).
