Harry S. Truman Receives Ivory Cane and Gives it to the Library

Kansas City, MO. Former President Harry S. Truman, arriving at Kansas City Municipal Airport today after a visit in the east, displays an ivory walking stick presented to him by humorist Harry Hershfield. The stick reportedly was once owned by President Ulysses S. Grant. The Harry S. Truman Library commented that if its history is correct the cane was given to Grant in 1879 by Li Chang, then prime minister of China. From: Houston Post.

Harry S. Truman greets Jack Benny at Kansas City Municipal Airport

Former President Harry S. Truman (right) chats with comedian Jack Benny (center) today after Benny's arrival at the Kansas City Municipal Airport. Benny arrived by plane -- not in the ancient Maxwell in which he's seated. As a gag, he took a brief ride in the car driven by Carthell McClain, left. Truman and Benny will make guest appearances with the Kansas City Philharmonic orchestra tomorrow night, Truman as a conductor and Benny as a violin soloist.

Harry S. Truman Receives a National Farmers Award

Denver, Colorado. Former President Harry S. Truman receives the National Farmers Union award for outstanding service to agriculture from James G. Patton, Farmers Union president. Speaking before the union, Harry S. Truman said "Any farmer who voted Republican in 1948 ought to have his head examined. It was true again in 1952 and 1956. It is still true again in 1960." Same as 81-166, slightly better print. From: Houston Post.
