Aerial view of dependent housing area along Route One, approximately one mile north of Naha, Okinawa. One hundred ninety-eight houses have been contracted for in this area and are being built by the Okinawa District Engineers. There will be an additional one hundred fifty constructed at a later date.

One hundred fifty dependent homes are under construction in the Sukiran Tybase area of Okinawa, under the supervision of the District Engineers. One hundred ninety-five additional homes will be built under contracts to be let.

Ryukyus University at Shuri, Okinawa. This is the first higher education plant ever built in the Ryukyus. President of the university is Koshin Shikiya former "Chiji" of Okinawa. Additional buildings are presently being constructed under the Civil Administration.

After more than 1300 years of political reign by Okinawan Kings and subjugation by foreign powers, the people of Ryukyus went to the polls in the fall of 1950 and cast their first free ballot for the candidates of their choice. A new democratic era was ushered in when the inaugurations took place in November, 1950.

The Buckner Memorial near Itoman, Okinawa. Lieutenant General Simon Buckner was killed on this spot during the battle of Okinawa. As Commander of the American 10th Army, he was watching the progress of the battle. This memorial has the story engraved in English on one side and Japanese on the other.

At a ceremony March 26th, Major General Robert S. Beightler, Commanding General, Ryukyus Command and Deputy Governor with Colonel Thomas Lane, Okinawa District Engineer Major E. G. Georgia, DE, Mr. Harry Kim, one of the supervisors of the new project, Mr. M. Notomi, President of the Notomi-Kensetsu Company which will handle the grading and utility installation for the area, and a foreman of the workers on the new housing project Sukiran where 195 dependents dwellings will be built.
