Unidentified Mosque Located in Soviet Union

Unidentified exterior view of what appears to be an old mosque with both men and women standing near. According to Charles Thayer's curriculum vitae: "In 1955 I made an extended tour of European and Asiatic Russia and wrote a series for the Saturday Evening Post on post-Stalinist Soviet Union." Although not identified, this photograph is believed to have been taken during that trip. While in Uzbekistan, Thayer visited Tashkent, Samarkand, and Bukhara. This photo may have been taken in Bukhara.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius Monastery Near Moscow

Exterior view of what is believed to be the Smolenskaya Church located within the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius Monastery in the town of Sergiev Posad (Zagorsk) just northeast of Moscow, Russia. According to Charles Thayer's curriculum vitae: "In 1955 I made an extended tour of European and Asiatic Russia and wrote a series for the Saturday Evening Post on post-Stalinist Soviet Union." Although photo is not identified, this photograph is believed to have been taken during that trip. Thayer mentions visit in his December 5, 1955 diary entry.
